The Museum of American Art is an educational institution dedicated to assembling, preserving and exhibiting memories on modern American art shown in Europe during the 50es and early 60es. It opened in Berlin in 2004 at Frankfurter Allee 91.
This museum is an offspring of the Museum of Modern Art which itself is an exhibit in the Museum of American Art, as the most important American contribution to modern art. This small sized MoMA encapsulates European modern art of the first half of the 20th century, the way it was defined and promoted by Alfred Barr, Jr., the founding director of The Museum of Modern Art in New York. This particular interpretation of modern art, based on “international movements”, was established in New York in the mid 30es and brought to Europe after the war, where it gradually became the dominant narrative as we know it today.
The theme of the second exhibit “Americans” is a series of exhibitions of American art edited by Dorothy Miller that traveled through major European cities: 1953 “Twelve Contemporary American Painters and Sculptors”, 1956 “Modern art in the USA”, 1958 “The New American Painting”, and the 1959 American representation at Documenta 2. It is those MoMA exhibitions that helped establish the American modern art overseas, leading eventually to its dominance on the world scene.
The Museum of Modern Art and “Americans” were for the first time exhibited together 2003 in the Galerie 35 in Berlin. Later, in the Kunsthale Dresden this two collections were show n together in one room under the name Museum of American Art.

Das Museum of American Art ist eine Bildungseinrichtung, gewidmet dem Sammeln, Bewahren und Ausstellen der Erinnerungen an moderne amerikanische Kunst, wie sie in Europa in den 50er und frühen 60er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts gezeigt wurde. Eröffnet wurde es 2004 in der Frankfurter Allee 91.
Das Museum ist ein Ableger des Museum of Modern Art, welches als bedeutendster Beitrag Amerikas zu Modernen Kunst selbst als ein Ausstellungsstück im Museum of American Art zu sehen ist. Dieses MoMA im Kleinformat enthält Moderne Kunst Europas aus der 1. Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, so wie sie vom Gründungsdirektor des Museum of Modern Art in New York, Alfred Barr Jr. erklärt und gefördert wurde. Basierend auf der Idee von „internationalen Bewegungen“, entstand diese spezifische Interpretation moderner Kunst Mitte der 30er Jahre in New York und kam nach dem Krieg nach Europa, wo sie nach und nach die beherrschende Erzählung wurde, die wir heute kennen.
Das Thema des zweiten Ausstellungsteils „Americans“ umfasst eine Reihe von Ausstellungen amerikanischer Kunst, die - kuratiert von Dorothy Miller - durch Europäische Großstädte tourte: 1953 „Twelve Contemporary American Painters and Sculptors (12 zeitgenössische Amerikanische Maler und Bildhauer), 1956 „Modern Art in the USA (Moderne Kunst in den USA), 1958 „The New American Painting (Die Neue Amerikanische Malerei), und 1959 die Amerikanische Kunst auf der Documenta II. Es waren jene MoMA Ausstellungen, die halfen Amerikanische Kunst im Ausland zu etablieren und schließlich zu ihrer weltweiten Dominanz zu führten.
Das Museum of Modern Art und die „Americans“ waren zum ersten Mal zusammen 2003 in der Galerie 35 in Berlin zusehen. Später wurden beide Sammlungen in der Kunsthalle Dresden in einem Raum unter dem Namen Museum of American Art gezeigt.
